Revert Roblox's New Game Publishing Requirements That Harm (Small) Creators
Revert Roblox's New Game Publishing Requirements That Harm (Small) Creators
Das Problem
Roblox has always been a platform built on creativity, accesibility and opportunity. For years, pretty much anyone with an idea and a device that can run Roblox Studio could create and publish a game, regardless of their age or financial situation.
However, the recent update introducing new publishing requirements directly removes the freedom to create games for others to play.
Under these new restrictive rules, developer will now be required to verify their ID and have an active Roblox Plus subscription to be able to publish a game that is publicly available to everyone on the platform, not just trusted connections and players that are 16+.
While these changes may be intended to improve safety of the platform, but that does not justify Roblox limiting the freedom to develop Roblox games and excluding younger developers since many users can't afford a Roblox Plus subscription or have an ID to complete the verification. Additionally, it just actively discourages creativity, since some people just develop on Roblox just for fun and would actually want some people to see their games. Some people ended up growing up learning to make Roblox games, this update just shuts that door for current and future creators.
We are not against safety or moderation improvements, only against those that are harming the very community, that makes Roblox actually successful. This is not the first time that Roblox has harmed the development community.
Roblox is turning game creation from an open opportunity into a restricted privelege.
We call on Roblox to:
- Revert or significantly revise the new publishing requirements
- Ensure that new developers can still publish games without financial or identity barriers
- Maintain an open platform that encourages creativity and learning
Roblox thrives because of its creators and limiting who can create games just harms the entire platform.
