The Issue

I am a third-year nursing student at Trent University, currently preparing for my pre-consolidation phase, which takes place one semester before the critical care placement. Up until now, the criteria for being considered for a critical care placement have been based on maintaining a 75% average in nursing credits. Recently, this requirement was raised to an 80% average, which is an unexpected change and impacts me and many other students negatively.

For the past three to four years, my classmates and I have been working diligently in our nursing programs, aiming for the 75% benchmark that was communicated to us clearly by the Trent Nursing staff. This sudden change disrupts the plans and efforts of numerous students who have built their academic strategies around the initial criteria. As future nurses, especially those interested in critical care, we have been focusing on developing the skills necessary to excel in high-pressure environments, not just chasing grades.

The abrupt shift from a 75% to an 80% requirement might cause many capable and committed students to miss out on crucial opportunities to gain experience in critical care environments. Not only is this discouraging, but it also raises questions about fairness and transparency in educational expectations.

We urge the administration at Trent University to reconsider this decision and revert to the previously established 75% average requirement for the critical care placements for students currently enrolled in the program. Doing so will ensure that students who have worked towards this goal will not be penalized by last-minute changes in academic requirements. This adjustment will allow us to continue our focused and dedicated journey towards becoming proficient critical care nurses.

Please support this cause by signing the petition to reverse the revised GPA requirement for Trent University's critical care placements.
