The Issue

In a 4–2 vote, the Johnston County School Board banned teachers from displaying Pride flags—removing a visible symbol of support and safety for LGBTQ+ students.

This policy doesn’t protect students. It silences teachers and erases a message many students depend on: you are safe here, you are seen, and you belong.

With over 37,000 students in the district, this policy sends the wrong message to every LGBTQ+ child and every teacher who believes in dignity, visibility, and inclusion.

Supporters of the ban claim all students are still protected, but at the same time, the board is debating whether to remove “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” from anti-bullying protections. That speaks volumes.

We’re calling on the Johnston County School Board to reverse the Pride flag ban immediately and uphold policies that explicitly protect LGBTQ+ students and staff from discrimination and harassment.

The next board vote is August 12. Let’s make sure every member knows the community is watching—and we will not stay silent when student safety and human dignity are under attack.
