—— NOT seeking donations for this, just signatures ——

Sterling Ridge Park, nestled at the base of a quiet residential neighbourhood, serves as a sanctuary for the many children, seniors, and families who live here. Designating this park as an overnight shelter for unhoused individuals poses significant challenges and risks for both our community and those expected to use it.

The park’s remote location, far from town , makes it impractical for individuals to commute daily with their belongings. As a result, many who seek shelter here are likely to remain in the area, spreading into surrounding streets and communities. Increased foot traffic along roads like Maple Bay Road, which lack sidewalks and safe pathways, would also create additional hazards, particularly at night. Sites like these are often accompanied by discarded items and drug paraphernalia, increasing exposure risks for children, pets, and other residents along these pathways and community.

While addressing homelessness is an important social responsibility, using public parks like Sterling Ridge for overnight shelter is neither safe nor effective for all. Sterling Ridge Park floods often during winter, creating a hazardous environment for anyone staying overnight. Homes back directly onto the park, raising serious security and privacy concerns for residents. Alternative solutions, such as expanding existing shelter facilities or repurposing unused buildings for temporary accommodations, should be prioritized.

We urge council to reconsider the designation of Sterling Ridge Park as an overnight shelter and seek better-suited alternatives that ensure safety, dignity, and well-being for everyone.
