Reverse the Cut to the Severe Disability Premium

The Issue

Every day, I wake up fighting a battle that isn’t just against my disability, but against the unfair system that is supposed to support people like me. This battle is made even harder now because the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has removed the Severe Disability Premium, now under the guise of 'transitional protection'. This lifeline, which kept many disabled claimants afloat, is being unfairly stripped away.

The Severe Disability Premium was vital. It ensured that despite our physical limitations, we could attend hospital appointments, purchase necessary medical supplies, and afford other basic necessities. Without it, myself and countless others are being pushed further into poverty, with our ability to manage our disabilities severely compromised.

Statistics show that disabled individuals are already one of the most economically disadvantaged groups in society. The Office for National Statistics highlights that disabled adults are almost twice as likely to live in poverty compared to non-disabled adults. Removing this financial support exacerbates these challenges, stripping away our dignity and leaving us vulnerable.

It is vital that the DWP reconsiders its stance. Instead of removing this essential support, the DWP should ensure that every disabled person receives what they need to live a life that is dignified and independently manageable. Providing this financial relief is not a privilege but a necessity for us to maintain basic human rights.

We need your help to make sure our government hears our plea. By signing this petition, you can help us amplify our voices, fight for justice, and restore the support that is not just necessary, but rightfully ours. Every signature counts towards making a difference in the lives of countless disabled individuals across the country.
