The Issue

The Aerobats program is a Parks and Recreation program in Plano, TX. This program creates access to gymnastics for families who may not be able to afford the private gyms and girls looking to try it before making a big commitment to the sport.
My daughter joined the Aerobats gymnastics program in Plano, TX the very week she turned four years old. Now, at seven, after her hard work and dedication, she has made the team. This should have been her first competitive season. However, the recent decision to discontinue the program threatens to take away this incredible opportunity from her and many other aspiring gymnasts.

For 50 years, Aerobats has been a staple in our community, providing a nurturing and challenging environment for young athletes in Plano. It's where children learn discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, qualities that extend beyond the gymnasium. It has shaped the lives of countless children, providing them not just with physical skills, but with confidence and a sense of belonging.

The decision to close this program was sudden and without adequate input from the community stakeholders who cherish it. The city of Plano must reconsider and consult with parents, athletes, and trainers who are all passionate about the benefits this program brings. Let’s not underestimate the profound impact this decision will have on these children’s athletic dreams and personal growth.

Moreover, closing such programs can have long-term consequences. Youth sports initiatives contribute positively to a community’s vitality and cohesion. They reduce juvenile delinquency rates, enhance educational performance, and foster healthier lifestyles. According to a report by the Aspen Institute, youth sport participation is linked with improved academic outcomes, healthier weight, and better mental health among young people.

By keeping the Aerobats gymnastics program active until May 2026, we allow current team members, including my daughter, to reach important milestones in their gymnastics journey. It gives us, the Plano community, the time and opportunity to explore sustainable alternatives if necessary.

Please join me in urging the city of Plano to rescind their decision to close the Aerobats gymnastics program. Let's keep the dreams of our young gymnasts alive and secure the future of youth sports in Plano.
