The Issue
My ancestors were part of a rich historical tapestry that helped shape the history of India as we know it today. This history is not just about lineage but about understanding the diverse and vibrant past that guides our present and future.
Recently, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) made the decision to remove the Maratha Empire map from the Class 8 textbooks, claiming that many of the regions depicted were not under the direct rule of the Marathas. This decision misrepresents the complex nature of historical empires and truncates the richness of the Maratha influence.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, and his successors created a vast dominion that symbolized resistance and resilience. The Maratha Empire played a significant role in Indian history from the 17th to the 19th century, impacting regions even beyond its "direct" control. This historical narrative is pivotal for the students of today to understand the socio-political dynamics and contributions that have significantly influenced the formation of modern India.
The exclusion of this critical piece of history from our curriculum not only undermines the Maratha legacy but also impairs students' ability to understand the evolution of Indian territorial boundaries and cultural integration over centuries. It overlooks the contribution of numerous leaders and communities that were unified under the Maratha umbrella, fostering a sense of identity and unity that resonates even today.
To rectify this, we urge NCERT to reinstate the Maratha Empire map in the Class 8 textbooks. Doing so will ensure that students receive a comprehensive appreciation of Indian history, which includes understanding the complexities of power, governance, and cultural diversity. Reintegration will balance historical narratives and provide a source of inspiration for students, encouraging them to explore further and appreciate their heritage.
Join me in advocating for a more inclusive and accurate portrayal of our past that respects and acknowledges the contributions of all regions and people. Sign this petition to restore the Maratha Empire map in school curriculums and ensure that every student has access to a complete and thorough historical education. Together, we can empower future generations with the truth about our diverse and enduring history.
