The Issue

Growing up in a low income family, the dream of attending university was always a glimmering aspiration for me. Education was my pathway to new opportunities, a better life, and the chance to contribute positively to society. But with the recent changes in the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) funding, this dream is at risk of slipping away from my grasp.

OSAP has been a critical resource for families like mine, easing the burden of university costs and offering hope to students who want to pursue higher education. The changes in funding mean that low-income students may receive significantly less financial support, making it nearly impossible for many to afford university tuition and associated expenses. According to the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, the funding cuts could reduce grants by more than 20% for some students, with an increase in repayable loans instead of non-repayable grants, which was essential in making education accessible.

This policy change not only affects individual students but also has broader implications on society. Education is a fundamental right and a significant driver of equality, innovation, and economic growth. By reducing access to education for those who are financially disadvantaged, we risk widening the socio-economic gap and losing out on the potential talent and contributions of many bright minds.

We urge the Ontario government to reconsider these changes and restore OSAP funding to levels that support all students, particularly from low-income households, to pursue their dreams without the fear of insurmountable debt. A fair education system should ensure that financial barriers do not derail the aspirations of its young citizens.

Please join me in signing this petition to send a strong message to policymakers that education should remain accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their family's financial situation. Together, we can advocate for a brighter, more equitable future for all students.
