The Issue

Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn’s new plan to reduce trash pickup in Medford, Massachusetts to once every two weeks has left residents frustrated and enraged. While the city celebrates environmental awards and grant money, many residents are asking a more urgent question: what about the rats, the smell, and the overflowing garbage?

This policy, announced alongside a $200,000 “Pay As You Throw” grant, slashes basic sanitation services in half. The change was quietly buried at the bottom of a press release, and now it is the community that is left to deal with the consequences.

Residents are already dealing with an increase in rodent sightings and are concerned that less frequent trash pickup will only make things worse. Local exterminators are seeing more business, and families are worried about how they will manage smelly garbage during hot summers and in dense neighborhoods.

Even Medford’s City Council President Zac Bears criticized the plan, saying the city has not provided data showing this is a good idea. He noted that the way this change was announced, hidden in a press release, shows how out of touch the administration is with day-to-day concerns.

We are calling on Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn to:

  • Reverse the decision to reduce trash pickup to twice a month
  • Conduct a public health impact review before making sanitation cuts
  • Increase transparency by clearly notifying residents of any proposed changes
  • Develop sustainable waste reduction strategies that do not sacrifice basic services

Sustainability should not come at the expense of sanitation. The people of Medford deserve clean neighborhoods, rodent-free streets, and honest communication from their leaders.

Sign this petition to demand that Medford restore weekly trash pickup and put public health first.

Responded
Note from Change.org: The Mayor posted this response on Facebook in regards to this issue and we wanted to be sure to share it with the people who have signed onto this petition. The response provides information about an upcoming meeting and an email address to share your thoughts. Link to Facebook Post and accompanying caption: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1591170755207113: I know a lot of people in our community are upset and worried about the plan to move to every other week trash in July 2027. There’s a lot of misinformation spreading, so hopefully this video will help you better understand the reasoning for the change that we negotiated, which was approved by the City Council in July 2023, and how we’re planning to engage you all over the next several months. We’re holding a virtual public input session on December 15 at 6 p.m. where staff will give a presentation on the program, followed by a Q+A session. An in person public meeting will be held the week of January 26, with more information to come. We’re just about finished with our Community Feedback Form to better gauge your specific challenges with trash collection and disposal, as well as gain more insights into how you manage your household trash and will release it after the holiday. If you want to learn more about the program please check out our FAQ (https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1764094801/medfordmaorg/vob7vpunixixoxwsljiu/Medford_PAYT_FAQ_Nov2025_1106252.pdf) or visit http://medfordma.org/waste.
