The Metropolitan Transportation Commission unexpectedly expanded the carpool hours on Highway 101 in Marin County to 5–10 AM and 3–7 PM both ways, altering the previously more manageable schedule of 6:30–9 AM southbound and 4:30–7 PM northbound. This abrupt and unwelcome change is having a disturbing impact on our community, especially for families, small businesses, and workers.

The new schedule creates chaos for families during morning school drop-offs. Many parents now have to fight increased congestion in the general lanes, leading to stressful commutes and late arrivals. The effects ripple out to our children, impacting their readiness for school and overall well-being. Furthermore, local businesses suffer as employees face longer commutes, leading to delays and potential loss in productivity. Small enterprises that rely on timely deliveries and services are particularly burdened, hampering their ability to thrive.

Moreover, the decision to expand these hours was made without adequate community input, leaving many residents feeling disregarded and frustrated. We believe that the voices of those who use these roads every day should be heard and respected. Our community deserves a say in decisions that affect our daily lives and well-being.

Reversing the expanded carpooling hours to the previous, balanced schedule would alleviate these issues and restore fairness for all road users. We call on MTC to reconsider this change and engage in meaningful dialogue with the community to seek solutions that truly serve the people of Marin County.

I’m a hairstylist and I hear people talking about it in the salon and how it negatively affects their daily lives. For myself, it has made my morning commute on Monday and Tuesday is nightmarish. 
I usually arrive at work around 9:45am, coming from Rohnert Park to Ignacio Blvd. 
The new commute hours add 20 minutes if not more to my morning commute. That extra 20 minutes is only between Rowland exit and Ignacio exit. It doesn’t make any sense!!!
