Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has extended an invitation to the President of the State of Israel, Isaac Herzog, to visit Australia.   Herzog has accepted. 

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel has said Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.   The Commission urges all States to fulfil their legal obligations under international law to end the genocide and punish those responsible for it.   The Commission concluded that Israeli President Isaac Herzog has incited the commission of genocide.

Australia has seen widespread protests and rallies against Israel's genocide in Gaza.

There has been growing international pressure for nations to hold Israel accountable for its actions and policies. Inviting the Israeli head of state at this time undermines calls for accountability while giving tacit approval to Israel for genocide.

We urge Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to reconsider this invitation in light of the significant condemnation of the State of Israel in the community and the conclusion by the UN Commission of Inquiry that President Herzog has incited the commission of genocide.
