Reverse Cancellation of Burnaby Seniors' Badminton and Table Tennis

Reverse Cancellation of Burnaby Seniors' Badminton and Table Tennis
The Issue
For the seniors of Burnaby, particularly those between the ages of 55 and 90+, the badminton and table tennis programs at the Bonsor Seniors Society mean more than just sports. They are a lifeline. These programs provide the participants not only with physical exercise but also with an invaluable space for social connections and emotional wellbeing. With 290 members in the badminton group and 242 in table tennis, these gatherings are crucial for our senior community, helping them maintain both physical health and social ties.
However, the city of Burnaby has decided to cancel these well-organized programs, intending to replace them with a "be active" drop-in model. Although this might seem like a modern and flexible approach, it poses significant barriers for many seniors. The new model requires either online registration or calling in, processes that are not senior-friendly, especially for those who struggle with technology or face language barriers, and there are many within our group who don’t speak English fluently or at all.
The programs in place have been highly successful due in no small part to the fact that they are designed and run by seniors for seniors, resulting in high participation rates and minimal administrative burden on the city. Changing this dynamic could potentially exclude many seniors from participating, leaving them isolated and without the critical support these programs provide.
We acknowledge the city's effort to engage seniors in physical activities, but we urge them to recognize the unique needs and circumstances of our senior community. A complete transition to a "be active" drop-in model is not the right approach for such a diverse and tech-challenged group.
We, therefore, call on the city to reverse the cancellation of these programs and support our seniors in maintaining these longstanding and beneficial activities. All signatures gathered in this petition will demonstrate the community's commitment and the importance of these programs to the health and wellbeing of Burnaby's senior citizens. Please sign this petition to help our seniors continue to thrive.
