The Issue

I am a devoted parent and an avid baker, eager to support my son's marching band by selling baked goods. Baking cookies brings joy both to me and to those who enjoy them, and it's a straightforward way to raise funds for the band’s activities. However, the Agua Fria Union High School District has made the decision not to permit the sale of cottage license baked goods on campus for fundraising.

This policy is puzzling and frustrating, as the local county health department has already exempted cottage vendors like myself from the need for a special permit. Despite this clear exemption, the district persists in its refusal, largely for reasons related to district liability for possible food allergies and concerns for immunocompromised individuals.

It's important to note that my cookies are individually packaged and sealed with full ingredient lists, allergen information, and cottage license home kitchen disclosure. This level of precaution and transparency exceeds that of other vendors and concession stands that don't disclose allergens, posing at least as much risk as my strictly labeled goods.

Allowing cottage vendors to participate in school fundraisers not only supports student activities financially but also fosters a sense of community and inclusion. My cookies can offer the marching band and other student activities much-needed financial support without compromising health and safety.

I urge the Agua Fria School District to reconsider their decision. A reasonable solution is possible, such as setting specific guidelines for cottage vendors to follow or providing designated areas and events where these goods can be safely sold.
