The Issue

I'm a 62 years old woman with aspirations to further my education by pursuing a Master's in Artificial Intelligence at Southampton University. However, there's an obstacle in the way of my dreams – Funding - A new system of funding called the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE)  is being implemented on 1st January 2027 . It replaces previous higher education and some further education funding.

The introduction of the LLE marks a significant shift in how student finance is managed, aiming to provide individuals the opportunity to enhance their education at various stages of life. However, while the intention of empowering lifelong learning is commendable, enforcing an age ceiling at 60 overlooks the potential and aspirations of older learners like myself who are ready and willing to engage in higher education as a means to making a meaningful contribution to society and the world of employment.

In an era where age discrimination is increasingly challenged in workplaces and other societal arenas, why should age bar one from educational funding? Education should be a universally accessible right, regardless of age, and denying opportunities based on an arbitrary age limit is intrinsically unjust. Many individuals over 60 continue to contribute meaningfully to society and the workforce; hence, they should equally have access to educational resources to enhance their skills and knowledge.

The Government has a responsibility to foster a fair and inclusive educational environment that encourages and supports lifelong learning for all. Removing the age restriction from the LLE would not only uphold the principles of equality and non-discrimination but also allow passionate learners like me the chance to continue our education and positively impact the world around us.

I invite you to join me in urging the Government to amend the Lifelong Learning Entitlement to include individuals of all ages. By doing so, we can ensure that education remains a powerful tool for personal and societal growth, free from age-based limitations.

Please sign this petition to advocate for an educational system that truly embraces lifelong learning for everyone.
