Revamp Drug-Related Case Handling in Kerr County
The Issue
My husband has lived a drug-addicted life since he was 15 years old. He has been in and out of prison three times, from the age of 18 to now being 33. Throughout these years, he has had no family support or peer support, which has left him feeling alone and hopeless. He has never cared enough about himself to believe there was hope for a drug-free life. Today, he feels safer in prison than in the free world because when he is released, he is thrown back into the same environment that fuels his addiction.
This cycle of incarceration offers no real solution to his addiction and ultimately fails to address the root causes of his criminal behavior. In Kerr County, Texas, the current approach by the District Attorney and the 216th District Judge toward drug-related criminal cases, and cases arising from behaviors of drug-addicted offenders, desperately needs reform. Many offenders, including my husband, have never received any level of drug rehabilitation, mental health evaluations, or proper medication to aid their stability. They deserve treatment, not punishment.
Evidence suggests that comprehensive rehabilitation programs, rather than mere incarceration, significantly reduce recidivism rates. For instance, a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse highlights that tailored treatment can reduce drug use by 40 to 60 percent and increase employment prospects by 40 percent, ultimately leading to safer communities.
We must advocate for change in how the justice system handles these cases, pushing for more rehabilitative and supportive measures. Programs that include drug rehabilitation, mental health care, and community support can offer offenders a genuine chance to reintegrate into society successfully. Such reforms not only benefit the individuals and their families but enhance the well-being of our entire community.
Together, we can create a more compassionate and effective justice system that addresses addiction as the public health issue it is, rather than merely dispensing punishment. These changes can help individuals like my husband find the support needed to become productive members of society.
Join me in urging Kerr County's officials, including the DA and the 216th District Judge, to prioritize rehabilitation over incarceration. Sign this petition, and let's work together to create a system that offers hope and a future for those struggling with addiction.
