Return the Marcus Garvey effigy to its rightful place
The Issue
My name is Alesia Greenidge , and I have started this petition to request the safe return of the Marcus Garvey effigy to the inside of the Marcus Garvey Centre in Tottenham. The Marcus Garvey history is rooted in the empowerment and unity of African people globally through the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL), that continues to inspire and resonate, not only in Jamaica but across the Caribbean and in every corner of the African diaspora.
For 15 long years, the Marcus Garvey effigy resided within the Marcus Garvey Centre, . Positioned there, it stood as a testament to Garvey's tireless efforts alongside his wife, Amy Jacques Garvey, and reminded us all of the power of unity and self-determination.
However, this symbol of our resilience and history has been displaced, now located outside the Marcus Garvey Centre. While it may appear a small change to some, to us, it's an erasure of context and an omission of the profound respect that should be accorded to such a monumental figure.
Returning the effigy to its rightful place within the Marcus Garvey Centre is more than just rectifying a displacement; it is about preserving our cultural heritage and ensuring that Garvey’s monumental contributions remain highlighted in an environment dedicated to education and remembrance.
The Marcus Garvey Centre is also a focal point for celebrating Garvey's legacy and providing education on his important work. By returning his effigy, we can continue to inspire future generations who come to learn about their roots and the power of community activism that Garvey championed.
We urge the local council and local library group, to recognize the importance of this effigy and its rightful home at the Marcus Garvey Centre. Let us place this symbol of unity and strength back into a setting worthy of its historical significance.
