To all supporters, it is anticipated that tomorrow in the South Gippsland Sentinel-Times, a story about a survey that we sent out last week to all candidates vying for election on the South Gippsland Shire Council is going to be published. The majority of responses and feedback that we have feedback has been positive. The time to respond closes on Tuesday the 27th of September and a media release about this survey and our group's direction during and the municipal elections will be published during the following week. In this survey, we posed two simple questions requiring a 'Yes' or 'No' answer from the candidates: 1) "Will you support as a priority Council project the return of the rail to Leongatha?" YES / NO 2) "Will you support the funding of an integrated transport plan for SW Gippsland at a cost of $30,000 - $40,000 in conjunction with the FOUR other local councils?" YES / NO This survey was composed and developed as a collective effort and the arguments and specifics that we presented in these questions was not 'solely' put together by an individual. It is fair in an open and functioning democracy to ask these questions for an occasion such as a municipal election and regardless whether you support it or not, before or after the election, we will not be highly critical of your decision. On the subject of the changeover of the Co-chairs in the South and West Gippsland Transport Group. Max Semken requested indefinite leave from the group earlier in September due to personal reasons. Cr. Andrew McEwen stood down due to his Council re-election commitments and if there was any potential conflict of interest, despite the fact that we are a public transport advocacy group. Chair David Rasmus and Deputy Chair Chris Cantlon were appointed their positions without any opposition from the committee due to their work that they have done and time committed for the group over the last 12-18 months. The South and West Gippsland Transport Group is an independent public transport advocacy of approximately 2,000 supporters that was established in April 2011 on the back of people in the local community and will continue to work towards and make transport and infrastructure reforms and improvements in the region a reality. Message sent on behalf of the South & West Gippsland Transport Group. “The South & West Gippsland Transport Group aims to improve public transport. It is advocating the return of rail services to Leongatha, to establish a rail loop between Cranbourne and Pakenham and to improve bus services between towns and Melbourne”.
