Return of the Leongatha to Melbourne Passenger Trains on the South Gippsland Rail Corridor

The issue

The people of South Gippsland in Victoria's south east have been left in the dark by the Victorian government when it comes to effective public transport solutions since the rail passenger service to Leongatha ceased on July 24 1993. Numerous Victorian government studies conducted in 2000/01 and 2007/08 have concluded that it is 'feasible' to reopen the railway line for both passenger and freight services, however, the continuation of the growing cost of rebuilding the line over the years due to a lack of maintenance has deterred previous state governments from delivering this essential public transport service to those who live in the Casey, Cardinia, Bass, Wellington and South Gippsland shires.

Support the return of the Leongatha passenger rail service!

The intention of this is webpage is to support the continuous hard working efforts of the members of the South and West Gippsland Transport Group, who have been campaigning for this railway to be reopened since the day it was closed and handed over to the South Gippsland Tourist Railway on December 15, 1994. It has been clear over the last generation that the Victorian government has been unwilling to implement effective public and freight transportation solutions to the South Gippsland region. The South Gippsland Highway has become the main source of transportation infrastructure for the people living in the these regions situated within South Gippsland. However, for the last 50 years, the neglect shown by our state government when it comes to public and rail transport orchestrated the move to close many Victorian lines such as the former 'Great Southern Railway'. The growth and development of these regions situated within South Gippsland have gone backwards since the railway line adjacent to the South Gippsland Highway was closed in stages during the late 20th century.

Sign the Petition and visit and support this proposal by following us on Facebook and our Website so that the regions and townships situated along this rail corridor can have access to essential and adequate public transportation solutions and no longer be isolated from Melbourne and Victoria.
