Good Morning Everyone!
First, I want to wholeheartedly thank all of you for the major push on this petition. In the last two months alone, we have gained over 3,000 unique signatures currently totaling over 4,000 supporters!
Secondly, and most importantly, I wish to apologize for my recent silence. Whilst this issue was gaining traction throughout the United States (*Looking at you, former Washington R**skins & Cleveland 'Indians'*) I have been quietly making this a state issue and working with State Senator Pete Harckham in the 40th District of New York, his legislative director, and his director of constituent services to create, introduce, and sponsor NYS Senate Bill S8708!
This bill is entitled: "Relates to excluding schools with race-based mascots from receiving state funding" and has been successfully introduced into the NYS Senate as of July 9th, 2020. This bill is currently being reviewed within the Rules Committee and has a long way to go before being signed into law by the governor.
We are at a critical stage in this bill's progression, where we need to continue to reach out to our local state senators to co-sponsor this bill and show adamant support as New York State residents!
Here are some critical action steps we need you to perform:
1) Click the link below and show your support for this bill (if you write your address your local state senator will be notified about your support)
2) SHARE THIS BILL FAR AND WIDE!!!! Our NYS reps need to hear a resounding amount of support that backs the decision to pass this important piece of educational equity legislation!
Do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns! Together, we can mobilize unprecedented change!
