This petition aims to honor the memory of Mason Rohwedder, an outstanding student and athlete who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on October 24, 2024. Mason was not only an excellent student but also a great motivation for his peers on and off the baseball field. He played catcher for the Orcutt Academy baseball team for 4 years, while wearing the #9 jersey with pride. He attended Alice Shaw Elementary, Orcutt Junior High School, and graduated from Orcutt Academy High School in June 2024. He was deeply rooted in this community having grown up here, and gave back by becoming an umpire for younger baseball leagues and attending Outdoor School his senior year as a counselor, impacting all the 6th students he encountered and the teachers.

His passing has left the people who knew him best, and an entire community, in mourning, illustrating the significant impact he had on all who had the pleasure of interacting with him. Retiring his #9 jersey would be a heartfelt commemoration of his contribution to Orcutt Academy High School, Orcutt Union School District, the Orcutt community, and a show of solidarity to his grieving family.

We call upon the Orcutt Union School District to demonstrate their commitment to honoring students' legacies, putting our students first, and showing empathy to those affected by tragic incidents. We believe the gesture of retiring Mason's jersey not only supports his family but also sends a powerful message about our community's shared values and our commitment to remember those who have touched our lives.
