The issue

For someone like me, a 12-year-old navigating the world, social media isn't just an online playground—it's a lifeline. It's where I connect with my friends, where we share everyday moments, support each other, and even find inspiration. Every morning, my friends and I look forward to filming 'Get Ready With Me' videos, which not only bring joy but also motivate us to start our day positively. Social media isn’t just an option; it's a necessity for our social and emotional well-being.

However, the recent proposal to ban social media platforms threatens to sever this vital connection. While we recognize the concerns that have led to this drastic measure, such as the potential for misinformation or online bullying, completely banning these platforms is not the right solution. It overlooks the substantial positive impacts social media has on young people like me, including building supportive communities, fostering creativity, and enhancing communication skills.

If implemented, this ban could lead to increased social isolation and potentially escalate mental health issues among us youths. Statistics reveal that social media is a crucial support network for teenagers, with 81% of teens saying it makes them feel more connected to their friends. Without these platforms, there is a genuine risk of heightened anxiety and depression.

Rather than prohibiting the use of social media altogether, we urge consideration of alternative solutions that target the negative aspects specifically. This could involve increased education on digital literacy, the implementation of stronger safeguards against cyberbullying, and promoting positive online interactions. It's essential to engage with mental health professionals, educators, and tech companies to create a comprehensive strategy that addresses the issues without cutting off our digital lifelines.

Join us in urging policymakers to reconsider this proposal and work towards solutions that preserve our essential connections to the virtual world. Social media is more than just a pastime; it's a fundamental part of how we live and grow today. Please sign the petition and help maintain our digital community.
