As an affirming member of the LGBTQ+ community, I find the alteration of the National Red Poppy – a symbol of unity and respect used to commemorate all lives lost in wars – to be disheartening.

The recent embrace of the Pride Poppy undercuts not only the historical significance of the original red poppy, but moreover it relegates some to the role of a 'second party' in this shared history. For over a century, the red poppy has transcended political, religious, and social differences to represent all.

Now, it seems that the original symbol of collective resilience and unity has been obscured. I strongly believe that our diverse identities can, and should, stand proudly - but not at the expense of a unifying national symbol. According to the Royal British Legion, "the red poppy is a universal symbol of remembrance and hope," and it's crucial that we preserve this tradition (Royal British Legion, 2021).
