Retain Paper Hall Passes Over Phone App in Champaign Schools

Retain Paper Hall Passes Over Phone App in Champaign Schools
The Issue
As a concerned student in Champaign, IL, I am deeply troubled by the recent shift from traditional paper hall passes to a phone app. This change is not only an invasion of personal privacy but also serves as a distraction during class hours. Our right to privacy should not be compromised under the guise of modernization or efficiency.
The introduction of this app raises serious concerns about data security and privacy. In 2021 alone, there were around 2691 reported data breaches in the United States affecting nearly 31 million records (source: best colleges). With this new system, our personal information is at risk every time we request a hall pass.
Moreover, having phones out during class hours can lead to distractions and disrupt the learning environment. According to research conducted by Rutgers University, students who did not use their mobile phones during lectures performed significantly better in end-of-term exams than those who did (source: Rutgers University Study).
We urge the school administration to reconsider this decision and return to using paper hall passes for student movement within school premises. The well-being and academic success of students should always be prioritized over technological advancements that pose potential risks.
Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving our rights to privacy and maintaining an optimal learning environment free from unnecessary distractions.
