The Issue

We are a collective of passionate learners and educators dismayed at the upcoming changes in the McKinney Independent School District. We pen this with heavy hearts, as German language courses — instrumental in shaping our lives — are being removed as an option for incoming freshmen in the 2025-2026 school year. While every student has a unique experience, a common thread tying us together is the power of the German language in our lives. This language has served as a silver bridge to diverse opportunities and friendships across borders, encompassing more than just syllables and rules — it has offered us an understanding of cultures, perspectives, and people. We have gained more than just linguistic abilities; we've stepped into an expanding world of discovery and real-life applications. Particularly noteworthy has been the tireless dedication of our beloved teacher, Chris Kohler, who has given us the understanding that language transcends textbooks, fostering real-world relationships, and grounding us with an inclusive global mindset. We appeal to the McKinney ISD to reconsider this decision, based on its tangible impact on its own students and the broader community it serves. Keep German courses in the curriculum, enabling future freshmen to embark on the same enriching journey we have enjoyed. Stand with us in supporting the appreciation of language diversity as an important aspect of education — sign this petition to stop the district from robbing the next generation of this profound experience.
