The Issue

Sanskrit is not just an ancient language; it is a key to unlocking vast reservoirs of knowledge in science, mathematics, philosophy, linguistics, and literature. Many invaluable texts on medicine (Ayurveda), astronomy, architecture, and more remain underexplored due to the lack of scholars proficient in Sanskrit. Encouraging students to learn Sanskrit will empower future generations to conduct meaningful research on these ancient texts and bring forth knowledge that benefits humanity.

Despite the importance of Sanskrit, no IGCSE-affiliated school currently offers it as a second language. Moreover, Cambridge Education has decided to discontinue Sanskrit as a second language from 2027 due to an insufficient number of candidates.

This decision will further limit opportunities for students who wish to study Sanskrit at an advanced level.

To address this issue, we call upon:

Cambridge Education to reconsider its decision and continue offering Sanskrit as a second language in the IGCSE curriculum beyond 2027.

All IGCSE-affiliated schools in India and globally to introduce Sanskrit as a second language option, thereby increasing the number of students who can enroll in the subject.

Parents, educators, and students to sign this petition and urge their schools to formally request Cambridge to maintain Sanskrit as an IGCSE language option.

We firmly believe that integrating Sanskrit into the curriculum will ensure that students receive a holistic education while preserving and promoting a linguistic and cultural heritage that has immense academic value.

Please sign and share this petition widely. Together, we can make a difference and secure the future of Sanskrit education for our children!
