The Issue

The heavy use of  Manhattan's St. Vartan Park basketball courts has escalated the need for safety-focused resurfacing of the full court and half court on the west side of the public park. The courts are off Second Avenue between 35th and 36th Streets.

The courts are hampered by cracks,  indentations and other deficiencies that have caused and contributed to player injuries.

St. Vartan Park Conservancy has been advocating for this need to elected officials and  New York City government agency Manhattan Community Board 6 (CB6).  The Conservancy's basketball committee is now raising this issue publicly to help show the community support behind the campaign.

St. Vartan Park Conservancy has is separately advocating for upgrades to the park's adjacent handball courts heavily used for pickleball that have also caused player injuries.

The  inclusive courts have been used by young beginners to NBA players, including New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony below during his last year with the team.
