The Issue

As a parent in the UK, I have experienced firsthand the challenges of arranging childcare during the lengthy summer holiday. The current school holiday schedule, structured around Easter rather than consistent seasonal breaks, creates a significant financial burden on families. This becomes particularly apparent during the summer when many parents struggle to find affordable childcare arrangements or face the prospect of expensive holiday clubs.

Moreover, the current school calendar discourages families from taking holidays abroad, as peak travel times coincide with inflated costs. By shifting the holiday periods, families could benefit from more affordable travel opportunities outside of the conventional holiday rush.

We propose a sensible restructuring of the school holidays: introducing two weeks in May/ June and two weeks in October, while making the Easter holidays in March/April set dates rather than fluctuating for the festive occasion. This arrangement ensures consistent seasonal breaks and reduces the overwhelming burden of a long summer holiday, potentially shortening it to four to five weeks.

This change would not only support working families in finding affordable childcare solutions throughout the year but also offer them the flexibility to plan vacations outside the peak pricing times. Additionally, it would alleviate the strain on childcare services and allow these providers to better distribute their resources throughout the year.

Educational experts can help ensure that these adjustments remain in the best interest of students’ academic success by evaluating their impact on the curriculum and learning schedules. Importantly, other countries successfully manage academic calendars with shorter summer holidays, which can serve as useful references for implementing change.

This would also give those families at greater risk a more secure environment as the settings won’t be going so long without seeing these families where safeguarding risks are higher and rise during long breaks. This will also reduce the risk of rising concerns where families struggle to managed the current holidays by splitting all their holidays and spending less time together as a family which is what the holidays are meant for.

We urge the UK government and educational authorities to review and revise the school holiday structure for the benefit of families across the country. This shift would reflect modern family dynamics and economic considerations, easing parental pressures without compromising educational outcomes.

Please join us in calling for this essential change to support families, improve childcare affordability, and create more equitable travel opportunities. Sign this petition to voice your support for restructuring UK school holidays in a way that benefits everyone involved.
