Restrict The Use of Fireworks

Restrict The Use of Fireworks
The Issue
Every year, as the fireworks season approaches, my heart fills with dread for my dog, who becomes extremely distressed by the loud explosions and flashes of light. Like many pet owners across the UK, I've witnessed firsthand the anxiety and fear that fireworks inflict upon our beloved animals. It's heartbreaking to see them shake in fear, pant excessively, and try to hide from what they perceive as danger. My dog, Murphy, hides in our cellar as it is the most quiet space he can find. We make up a bed for him with all of his favourite toys, blankets and comforting smells of us. His panic lasts the whole duration of the fireworks and for hours after as he is impending more loud bangs.
This distress is not limited to pets alone. Many individuals with autism, PTSD, and other sensory-sensitive conditions find fireworks deeply unsettling. The seemingly random, sporadic bursting sounds can trigger anxiety attacks and lead to a decline in mental health for vulnerable individuals. Additionally, wildlife is severely affected, often resulting in injuries or fatalities as they panic and flee from noisy displays. The debris left behind from fireworks, including metal, plastic, and paper, can take a long time to decompose, causing strain on wildlife’s habitats and the environment.
While fireworks are a traditional part of celebrations, we must weigh the social and emotional cost they impose on our communities. According to the RSPCA, a staggering 62% of dogs in the UK show significant signs of distress during fireworks displays. Also, firework related accidents result in numerous injuries every year, placing additional strain on our NHS.
We are not calling for an end to celebrations but rather a responsible approach that considers everyone’s well-being. We propose the implementation of quieter, silent fireworks for public events, limiting the sale of consumer fireworks to professional displays only. Additionally, stricter regulations on the timings and locations for fireworks would lead to a more predictable environment for those affected.
The safety and comfort of our pets, vulnerable individuals, and wildlife should be prioritised. Let us make our festivities inclusive and safe for all living beings, celebrating in ways that do not come at a significant cost.
Please join us in calling for a ban on the use of traditional fireworks and support measures for a more peaceful and considerate celebration. Sign this petition to urge the UK government to take immediate action.
