The Issue

I am looking at a blank page, and honestly that says a lot. For all the noise around Flock cameras, for all the fear, anger, and promises that this is about protecting children, so much of the real conversation gets erased. What is happening to our privacy in our own neighborhoods? Why are families supposed to just accept more surveillance without clear limits?

This does not affect just one household. It affects every parent driving their kids to school, every neighbor coming home from work, every child growing up believing they should be watched everywhere they go. We cannot keep pretending that more cameras automatically means more safety when the cost is our privacy, our freedom of movement, and our trust in the places where we live.

I am calling on local leaders to put real restrictions on Flock camera use around schools, residential streets, and family spaces. There must be clear rules for where these cameras can be placed, how long data can be kept, who can access it, and how the public is informed before more surveillance is added. If this technology is going to exist in our communities at all, it cannot operate without meaningful limits and public accountability.

If you are tired of being told to trade your rights for vague promises, please sign. If you care about protecting children without turning every neighborhood into a monitored zone, please add your name. We deserve safety and privacy, and we should not have to give up one to keep the other.

“Metro has written and well documented restrictions on the use, storage and location of license plate readers. These standards are more strict than state regulations and address many of the concerns raised in other communities related to the use of the data as well as auditing the access to the data by those permitted to use the equipment. As chair of the Metro Council’s Safety Committee I have held hearings on this matter and will continue to ask questions and seek any additional protections if they are needed. License plate readers have been incredibly helpful in solving crimes especially abductions, property crimes and most recently the apprehension of the accused murdered of a State Police Officer, but to continue to have this resource we must make sure that all protections possible are considered.
