Restrict AI usage and energy consumption

The Issue

As someone who witnesses firsthand the impact of artificial intelligence in educational settings, I am deeply concerned about its unregulated proliferation and the consequences on our environment and society. In schools, students increasingly rely on AI for even the simplest answers, reducing their learning opportunities. Moreover, teachers often use AI to create class materials, potentially diminishing their own engagement with the content. Beyond education, AI is misused in the media to disseminate false information and generate inappropriate content.

The unchecked expansion of AI poses a significant threat to our environment due to its high energy consumption. Data centers that host AI applications consume vast amounts of electricity, contributing to carbon emissions and exacerbating climate change. According to a study by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, training a single large AI model can emit as much carbon as five cars over their lifetimes. This is a clear indication that AI, if left unregulated, can have a devastating impact on our planet.

To address these pressing issues, I urge policymakers to implement stringent regulations on the use of AI and its energy consumption. First, we must establish clear guidelines for ethical AI deployment, ensuring it is used responsibly in education and media. Secondly, the development and operation of AI technologies should prioritize energy efficiency, possibly mandating the use of renewable energy sources. By setting limits on energy usage for AI projects and promoting sustainable practices, we can mitigate its environmental footprint.

Furthermore, an independent body should be appointed to monitor AI developments and compliance with regulations. This body would ensure transparency and accountability within the AI industry, fostering trust among the public and stakeholders.

By taking these actions, we can balance the benefits of AI with the need to protect our environment and society. Sign this petition to call on our leaders to restrict AI usage and its energy consumption for a sustainable and ethical future.
