The Issue
Restore VA Home Loans for Veterans Impacted by the 2007–2010 Housing Crisis
To: U.S. Congress, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the President of the United States
Petition Summary
We, the undersigned, call for a one-time restoration of VA home loan benefits for Veterans who lost their homes or were forced into foreclosure or short sales due to the 2007–2010 housing market crash. These Veterans were not irresponsible borrowers; they were victims of a catastrophic economic collapse. Yet while banks received billions in federal bailouts, the Veterans who served our country were left behind, stripped of their hard-earned VA loan entitlement. It is time to right that wrong.
Petition Text
Between 2007 and 2010, America experienced one of the most devastating housing crises in its history. Entire neighborhoods across the country fell into foreclosure. Home values plummeted. Short sales became commonplace. Millions of Americans lost their homes. Among them were thousands of Veterans who had used their VA home loan benefit, believing, rightfully, that it was a lasting reward for their service.
Instead, these Veterans were swept into financial ruin. Many were forced to relocate due to job loss or military transition. They had no choice but to sell their homes during a collapsed housing market, often for far less than what was owed. As a result, their VA loan entitlement was consumed or severely reduced, effectively stripping them of access to a benefit they had earned through military service.
At the same time, major banks and mortgage lenders were bailed out with over $700 billion in taxpayer funds through the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. These financial institutions received aid and protection from the very government veterans fought to serve—yet the veterans themselves were left to bear the burden of economic collapse alone.
Today, many of those same Veterans continue to be penalized. They are unable to access VA-backed home loans due to events that were entirely outside their control. They remain unable to re-enter the housing market using the very benefit that was intended to support their transition to civilian life.
This is not only unjust, it is un-American.
We are calling on Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs to enact a one-time restoration of VA home loan benefits for only those Veterans who lost their homes, or were forced into short sales, between 2007 and 2010 due to the housing crisis. This action would not only honor their service; it would uphold the promise our nation made to them.
Why This Matters
- Restores fairness to Veterans caught in an unprecedented national financial disaster.
- Acknowledges the government’s failure to protect servicemembers during the crisis while bailing out big banks.
- Supports Veteran homeownership and long-term financial stability.
- Demonstrates gratitude for military service with real, restorative action, not just words.
What You Can Do
Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to:
- Support legislation restoring VA loan entitlement for affected Veterans
- Direct the Department of Veterans Affairs to identify and provide relief to eligible individuals
- Recognize this issue in broader housing policy reform
Let’s ensure those who served are not forgotten in America’s recovery.
