Tēnā koutou katoa our beautiful elected Mps,

I am writing regarding the petition recently created calling for a leadership reset within Te Pāti Māori and a constructive review of the party’s governance and leadership structures. 277 individuals from the top of the north to the bottom of the south have petitioned, and the numbers keep growing.

The petition contains verified signatures from supporters across Aotearoa who care deeply about the strength, credibility, and future of the movement. Many of the people who have signed include both members and non-members who continue to believe strongly in the kaupapa that Te Pāti Māori represents.

Given the importance of the year ahead for Māori political representation, we believe it is vital that the party enters this period with unity, stability, and the confidence of its supporters and membership.

Recent developments, including matters that have been before the High Court concerning internal party processes, have raised concerns among supporters about governance, transparency, and the direction of the organisation. While the Court’s findings speak for themselves, they have prompted many supporters to call for a period of reflection and organisational reset so that confidence in the party’s processes can be strengthened.

For this reason, the petition respectfully calls for the party to consider convening a Special General Meeting (SGM). Such a forum would provide members with an opportunity to openly discuss governance matters and determine the best path forward for the party.

Supporters believe an SGM would allow for:

• Open discussion regarding leadership and governance structures

• Consideration of whether a leadership reset would strengthen unity and trust

• Democratic participation by all financial members in determining the future direction of the party

Many supporters also believe it is important to address concerns about perceived conflicts of interest and organisational relationships that may influence party governance, so that the party’s decision-making processes remain transparent and trusted.

This request is made with respect for the current elected Members of Parliament and the significant work they undertake on behalf of Māori communities. The petition reflects a desire to strengthen the party that supports them and to ensure that the organisation remains stable, accountable, and unified.

Te Pāti Māori was founded through the leadership of Dame Tariana Turia and Sir Pita Sharples with a vision grounded in integrity, representation, and tino rangatiratanga. Many supporters believe it is important that the party’s structures continue to reflect those founding values.

The petition therefore respectfully urges the leadership to consider appointing an independent facilitator chosen by an Elected MP to facilitate an SGM and allowing financial members the opportunity to determine the next steps for the party, including any motions of confidence or structural review that members may wish to raise.

The petition, containing verified signatures from across Aotearoa, and maori whanau in Australia, can be viewed

Thank you for considering the concerns and aspirations being expressed by supporters who want to see Te Pāti Māori continue to thrive and represent Māori voices with strength and unity.

Nāku noa, nā

TPM Financial Member and supporter or all elected MPs to whom I have formally identify who I am, but that is in confidence at this point.
