Restore Title IX protections for LGBTQIA+ students in the US
Restore Title IX protections for LGBTQIA+ students in the US
The Issue
I am a Christian woman and a freshman in high school. Every day, whether online or in person, I witness students facing bullying, harassment, grooming, sexual assault, and abuse simply for being queer. It breaks my heart to see my peers and people in the world suffer because they want to be who they are. Recent changes have made it worse by removing specific language from Title IX protections that protected LGBTQIA+ students from discrimination. If a student from the community is bullied at school, those protections are no longer in place to help them.
President Donald Trump's administration removed LGBTQ-specific language from these crucial anti-discrimination laws, creating a more hostile and unsafe environment for countless students like me across the nation. According to a survey by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), 70% of LGBTQ students report feeling unsafe at school due to their orientation or gender expression, and 59% have been verbally harassed.
These statistics highlight an urgent need for action. Education is a fundamental right, and no student should have to face discrimination, fear, or assault when trying to learn. By restoring and fortifying Title IX protections, we can ensure that every LGBTQIA+ student receives the equal education and safe environment they deserve. We must stand against the rollback of these protections and advocate for the rights of all students.
We call upon the Biden Administration and the Department of Education to reinstate the LGBTQ-specific language in Title IX protections. This change is vital to safeguarding the welfare and future of countless queer students who deserve to learn in a respectful and secure environment.
Join me in urging our leaders to take immediate action. Sign this petition to demand the restoration of rights for all LGBTQIA+ students in the United States. Together, we can make a change and foster a safe, inclusive future for everyone.
