The recent reduction of weekend hours at the pickleball courts in Stephens Park has caused a wave of inconvenience and frustration among residents. Earlier this year, the courts' weekend hours were cut by six hours each day—from 7 AM - 9 PM down to 10 AM - 6 PM—affecting numerous players in the community.

Pickleball is not just a sport; it's a vital community activity that offers significant health benefits. It provides an inclusive platform, bringing together people of all ages, fostering community spirit, and promoting physical well-being. For many, these courts are more than just a playing space—they are a haven for social interaction and exercise.

To play at a time that's both safe and comfortable—avoiding the intense midday heat and harmful UV rays—is crucial for everyone. It's especially important for our elders and those with certain health conditions. Early morning and evening sessions were ideal for this purpose. In fact, the courts' highest usage generally took place during the weekend times that are now prohibited. With the current restrictions, players are forced to either play at the peak of heat and UV exposure, or to not play on weekends at all.

Moreover, the change has inadvertently led to the misapplication of police resources. Officers are now periodically called to the park to enforce the reduced hours. This diverts essential resources away from more pressing community safety tasks.

We urge the Brownsburg Town Council to reconsider and restore the weekend hours of the pickleball courts—from sunrise to sunset. By doing so, we not only enhance community interaction and well-being but also better utilize our park and police resources.
