The Issue

I have witnessed firsthand the tears of Afghan girls, crying before me because they have been denied the fundamental right to education and freedom. These are not just statistics or headlines—these are real people, with aspirations and dreams, just like all of us. I have felt their pain deeply as I, too, was once in their position—unable to attend school until I left the country. I know how it feels to be deprived of an education and basic human rights.

The situation for women and girls in Afghanistan has reached a critical point. Since the abrupt political shifts, their rights have been systematically dismantled and ignored. The stories of Afghan women who risk their lives daily to continue learning and fighting for their rights are both encouraging and heartbreaking. It is a tragic loss not only for Afghan women themselves but for the global community. We are losing a whole generation of potential doctors, teachers, artists, and leaders.

According to UNESCO, millions of girls in Afghanistan have been effectively banned from secondary education. Human Rights Watch reports numerous accounts of women being forced out of workplaces and public spaces. The level of repression is alarming and unacceptable in the 21st century.

Rebuilding Afghanistan to be a place where women and girls can explore opportunities, develop skills, and contribute to society should be a priority for the international community. We must pressure governments, international organizations, and leaders to commit to protecting and restoring the rights of Afghan women and girls. This can be done through diplomatic efforts, economic incentives, and grassroots support for Afghan-led initiatives.

Every woman and girl deserves the right to education, freedom, and dignity. By showing global solidarity, we can amplify their voices and stand by their side in this struggle. Let us unite to push for policies that ensure the safety and empowerment of Afghan women.
