The Issue

Welcome to our Restore the Legacy Campaign Petition Form. This petition serves as a commitment to the support of this campaign, and the restoration of the Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center on Indiana State University's campus. In addition, this petition will aid in the installment of a historical marker for the African American Cultural Center.

In the 1970s, students on campus demanded and protested for equal work opportunities and a safe space

on campus. The AACC was more than a building; it was a source of empowerment and a home for generations of Black students seeking belonging, affirmation, and opportunity, and a place of ally ship for all. In June of 2025, "African American" was removed from the name and the space was repurposed to be a cultural center for all identity groups. This decision was made because of pressure from anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion legislation and state funding constraints. The University came to this conclusion with no discussion, consultation, or any sort of engagement from the students who were directly impacted by this change.

By participating in this petition, you are disapproving of Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Centers name change, you are agreeing that these actions by the university are a form of erasure, and that grouping all identity based organizations under one, Charles E. Brown Cultural Center, is problematic.

Your support is instrumental in driving forward initiatives, such as this campaign, that reflect the values and aspirations of the student body at ISU.

This petition will also serve as evidence of the student's needs, which will be presented to President Godard.

Join us in igniting a spark on campus and working to restore the Legacy of the African American Cultural Center.
