Restore the funding for the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program

Restore the funding for the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program
The Issue
Many of my friends rely on public transportation as an affordable means to get to school and navigate Halifax. The abrupt decision to cut $1.2 million of funding for the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program is forcing families to grapple with an unforeseen expense of $792 annually per student for transit passes. This financial burden is not just straining families, but also pricing them out of Halifax, a city that should welcome and support its youth.
Consider the significance of public transportation for students. It is not merely a means to travel; it is a lifeline to education, extracurricular activities, and part-time jobs that shape their futures. By eliminating financial barriers to access transit, the program empowered students to focus on their education and personal development without the looming worry of transit costs.
Statistics consistently show the critical role public transit plays in urban areas. According to Statistics Canada, over 70% of students in urban centers like Halifax use public transportation daily. Cutting this funding directly jeopardizes their educational opportunities and overall quality of life.
Furthermore, by reinstating the funding for the transit pass program, the Government of Nova Scotia can demonstrate a commitment to the region’s future. Education remains the cornerstone of societal growth and depriving students of affordable transportation is a step backward.
Halifax already faces challenges retaining its youth, with many leaving due to rising costs and limited opportunities. Supporting the transit pass program is an investment in retaining talent and ensuring a vibrant future for the city.
We urge the Government of Nova Scotia, including the Premier’s Office and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, to reconsider their decision. We call on provincial officials to restore funding for the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program, thereby honoring the promise of an inclusive and empowering environment for all of Halifax's students.
Please sign this petition to demand immediate action and restore the funding for the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program. Let us stand together in support of an accessible and equitable future for all students in our community.
