The Issue

My children used to love coming to Country Park in Greensboro, N.C. It was a place full of laughter, joy, and learning for them. However, to our dismay, the beloved playground was recently torn down by the city and replaced with a much smaller, less child-friendly version. This decision has left many families and children bitterly disappointed and without a suitable place to play and grow.

The previous playground was a vibrant and engaging space for kids of all ages. It was not just a playground; it was a community hub, a place where families could gather, children could make friends, and memories were made. The removal of this facility has left a void in the community.

In recent years, numerous studies have highlighted the importance of outdoor play in children’s development. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, outdoor play enhances physical fitness, social skills, and mental health. Greensboro's decision to replace a thriving, child-friendly play area with a smaller facility disregards the needs of our city's young residents.

Country Park is known for being a central location for recreation and family gatherings in Greensboro, and the lack of adequate playground facilities hinders these experiences. We believe that every child in Greensboro deserves a safe and engaging place to play, and Country Park is no exception.

We urge the Greensboro City Council to prioritize family-friendly public spaces. Restoring the playground at Country Park will not only benefit our children but also strengthen our community bonds.

Please sign this petition to show your support for restoring a child-friendly playground at Country Park. Together, we can make a change and provide our children with the joyful and enriching outdoor environment they deserve.

We appreciate the community’s passion and advocacy regarding the Country Park playground. We understand concerns have been raised, particularly about the play opportunities for younger children. The new playground structure was installed earlier this year using a combination of City and grant funding. It meets all required safety standards and policies. The primary difference from the previous equipment is that the new structure is designed for children aged 5–12, whereas the old playground also served children aged 2–5. To address this, we are hosting community engagement sessions to hear directly from residents about what they would like to see added for younger children. During these sessions, we will also present potential replacement pieces designed for children aged 2–5. Community Engagement Sessions: 1. Tuesday, October 7, 9:00–11:00 AM 2. Thursday, October 9, 3:00–5:00 PM Your voices are an important part of this process, and your involvement ensures that the playground continues to reflect the needs of our community.
