The article in Summerland review with a catchy headline was published shortly after the temporary fence was erected at Peach Orchard Park almost one year ago. “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to creating a dog-friendly community”, said the mayor.

“Council has been searching for a second fenced dog park that doesn’t display other user groups, especially youth. We know there are concerns about the suitability of the turf, scarcity of parking, impacts on other park uses, and disturbances to nearby residents. This is why it is being run as a trial. “

The temporary fenced dog park has displaced many children, families, seniors, and visitors who previously used the park. Whether it’s the constant barking,  reduced space, or lack of parking, these factors have caused negative effects on the community. The turf suffered great damage and it continues to be overused even during repairs. The reported nuisance complaints are not given the value they deserve. The park is not shared collaboratively, as one acre of the park is section for one user only.

It’s disheartening that the significant  feedback from numerous Summerland residents hasn’t received the attention it deserves. The district's efforts to resolve the issue seem to have yielded no tangible outcome. Time and resources have been invested in addressing this matter, yet there is no resolution.

Indeed, it’s crucial to direct our concerns to the right channels. Rather than barking up trees,  we bring our issues and concerns to our elected officials. However, it’s become increasingly evident that the patience of those affected negatively has worn thin, and action is long overdue.

Numerous viable solutions have been presented to the district, only to find that none have been acted upon. It’s time for the district to take decisive action, return the Peach Orchard Park to all the people, and remove the fence. Your help is appreciated. Please communicate your concerns to the council or the mayor. dholmes@summerland.ca
