Tullamarine’s History Deserves to Be Honoured

Tullamarine once had a place that proudly honoured its local Second World War servicemen and women - the Tullamarine War Memorial Hall.

Funded and built by the Tullamarine community in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this hall was more than just a building. It was a living tribute to sacrifice, service, and our local pride.

Today, that history has been lost in name.

Now, we have the chance to restore it.

What’s the Issue?

On 10 June 2025, Hume City Council agreed to change the name of Tullamarine Community Hall to its original name Tullamarine War Memorial Hall.

On 8 December 2025, Hume City Council refused to pass $1,500 in funds for new signage to restore our hall’s original name.

$1,500 - to recognise generations of service and sacrifice.

This is not just about a sign.

It’s about respect, memory, and community identity.

Why This Matters

Restoring the name Tullamarine War Memorial Hall will:

•  Honour the local families who built the hall and those who served
• Reconnect the Tullamarine community with its wartime history
• Create a meaningful focal point for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services
• Support local events, including community and football gatherings
• Ensure future generations understand the significance of this space

There’s a Simple Solution

Funding already exists.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) Saluting Their Service Community Grants Program supports projects just like this.

Hume City Council can - and should – allocate appropriate funds and also apply for this grant.

Our Call to Action

We call on Hume City Council to:

1.  Formally proceed with the renaming of the Tullamarine Community Hall to its original and historically significant name: Tullamarine War Memorial Hall; and
2. Approve and fund the installation of new signage, at an estimated cost of $1,500, to reflect this name change; and
3. Actively pursue external funding opportunities, including the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service Community Grants Program, to support the cost of signage and any associated commemorative improvements within Tullamarine.
