The Issue

Hi my name is Leighton Meyers I've been playing lacrosse since my freshmen year, and it's more than just a sport to me. It's a means of expressing my feelings, gaining confidence, and growing as a person. Lacrosse has given me a family, a place where I belong, and a dream to chase. Watching this program, which has been my anchor and guide through high school, fade away is heartbreaking. Knowing that future students might not get the chance to experience these incredible benefits saddens me beyond words.

Recently, our Merritt Island lacrosse program has come under threat, with plans to replace it with flag football. This decision undermines years of dedication, hard work, and passion that not just I, but countless young women have poured into lacrosse. This change doesn't just impact us; it affects our futures, our chances for scholarships, and the community spirit we've built.

Lacrosse is more than just a game; it's a platform for young women to excel, to break boundaries, and to foster lifelong skills. Removing this program strips us of opportunities and diminishes the diversity of sports offered in our community. Athletic programs are essential in shaping well-rounded individuals, and lacrosse, in particular, is vital for providing avenues of empowerment for young women.

There are solutions. Instead of replacing, we could find ways to accommodate both sports. Seeking alternative funding, utilizing shared facilities, or adjusting the school calendar can allow both lacrosse and flag football to coexist, enriching our sports culture rather than erasing a beloved tradition.

We urge the school administration, the school board, and the community to reconsider this decision. Help us keep the lacrosse program alive for current players and future generations. Please sign this petition to save Merritt Island Lacrosse and support the dreams and dedication of young athletes everywhere.
