The Issue

Summary:  Dr. Leo Igwe’s Facebook (FB) account was disabled on August 21, 2025, and it remains so as of October 16, 2025.  (See Thoughtfox report on his account's disablement.) We demand its restoration.

This is the link to his disabled account:  https://www.facebook.com/100001321628097

Please note that that this is the second time this year that Igwe has been locked out of his FB account by Meta.  The same situation played out in January, and a petition was also launched at the time to get his account restored--leading to a restoration. (See Thoughtfox report on that January disablement.)

Igwe's apparent fault this time around was that he shared the link to a video that was already circulating in the social media showing the open-air flogging of very young children by a pastor in Nigeria in the name of exorcism.  This incident was reported later by The Punch.

Igwe had to post that video to bring attention to the abuse of these children from a poor rural community--and to get the authorities to act against the culprit; he also wanted to rally the global public, including enlightened Facebookers, to fight these forces of ignorance that exploit innocent people through their irrational convictions in the supernatural.  Alas, Meta Inc., which controls Facebook, chose to take the side of that backward mindset by shutting out Igwe from its system a second time.

Igwe has been at the forefront of fighting witchcraft accusations that harm vulnerable communities in Africa.  Silencing him emboldens those he stands against.  Please #RestoreLeoIgwe’sAccount and support human rights!

Description:  Dr. Leo Igwe, a prominent advocate for human rights and a leading voice against witchcraft accusations in Africa, has had his Facebook account disabled by Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook. This is deeply concerning, as his account serves as a platform for raising awareness, rallying support, and protecting those falsely accused of witchcraft or being the repository of evil spirits.

Witch-hunting and abusive convictions in the supernatural generate harassment and even murder of vulnerable people, including women, children, and the elderly.  Igwe has dedicated his life to combating these injustices, but disabling his Facebook account silences his critical work and emboldens perpetrators of these crimes.

We urge @Meta and @MetaAfrica to review this decision and reinstate his account--and refrain from blocking it in the future.

Meta, as a company with an office in Lagos and a global commitment to fostering dialogue and community, must not suppress a voice championing human rights and civic enlightenment in Africa.

Igwe is busy throughout the year organizing talks (in Nigeria and other parts of Africa) intended to challenge communities on their false beliefs related to witchcraft, alleged witches and evil spirits; rescuing victims of witch hunts and abusive exorcism; securing police protection to individuals accused of witchcraft, being supernaturally evil, or practising black magic--and persecuted by witch hunters and violent religious vigilantes, etc.  His Facebook account needs to be re-enabled NOW!
