Jordan Chiles, an accomplished Team USA gymnast and a source of immense pride for our nation, has been stripped unjustly of a medal she fairly won. This came as a result of an appeal from the Romanian team, submitted a full five days after the event – and after Jordan had already celebrated her hard-earned triumph. The celebrated gymnast now suffers the emotional impact of this prejudiced act, further exacerbated by racially-charged comments suffered on Social Media. This integrity breach by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) undermines the very essence of fair play that sports stand for.

Jordan's journey to accolade was marked by tireless devotion, practice, and strength of character. Countless hours of training translated into an undeniably brilliant performance that rightfully earned her a bronze medal. To have that honor unfairly retracted has taken an immense toll on her mental health. The insidious racism that pervades the world of sports only magnifies this injustice, the burden of which no athlete should bear.

FIG and IOC should rectify this by giving back the medal to Jordan. Aside from placating a tarnished reputation, it will set the precedent that each athlete's efforts deserve respect and fair judgement. Secondly, it is crucial for governing sports bodies to take a stand against racism, fostering an environment wherein athletes of all backgrounds can compete without fear of prejudice or discriminatory backlash.
