The Issue

Five years ago this month, my grandmother tragically died from MRSA and sepsis, a direct result of neglect in an assisted living facility in Dover. Her preventable death devastated our family. She developed a foot wound which, over the course of five months, escalated into a life-threatening condition due to the facility's failure to provide proper care and their decision to withhold crucial information from our family. Had there been consistent and thorough oversight of these facilities, perhaps my grandmother's situation could have been addressed before reaching a critical stage.

Regrettably, Governor Meyer has not included FY27 funding for contractor resources dedicated to supporting the crucial task of surveying long-term care facilities every 12 to 15 months. This funding is vital. It ensured that 100% of assisted living facilities and 96% of nursing homes received proper surveys and oversight. Without this financial support, a significant number of these facilities will now go without annual oversight, potentially leading to more unchecked neglect and inadequate care, similar to what my grandmother endured.

Long-term care facilities house some of our most vulnerable community members, and ensuring their safety and well-being should be a priority. Monitoring and oversight are essential to guaranteeing that these facilities adhere to state guidelines and provide the quality care that every resident deserves. Without regular inspections and accountability, we risk allowing more neglect cases to slip through the cracks.

We appeal to Governor Meyer and other decision-makers to reconsider and restore the necessary funding for FY27. By doing so, we can help prevent further tragedies like the one that befell my family and save other families from enduring similar heartache. The absence of this funding endangers the welfare of countless individuals in long-term care facilities.

Please sign this petition to urge Governor Meyer and those in power to act now. Let’s ensure that every long-term care facility in our state maintains the highest standard of care through rigorous and regular oversight, ultimately protecting the health and lives of our cherished elders.
