The Issue

Alberta Child and Family Services (CFS) never gave us the chance to fight for ourselves. They designed funding programs for youth transitioning out of care behind closed doors because they know the stark reality: nearly half of homeless youth come from care and up to 1 in 3 end up without a home. This is not the kind of support system our vulnerable young people deserve.

As a former Edmonton Y50 youth who has fought to reclaim my life from addiction, I demand justice, accountability, and real change — not more budget cuts. I know firsthand the struggles that many face when transitioning out of care, and I refuse to stand by while more youth are thrown into uncertainty and hopelessness.

It's time to restore funding for all youth transitioning out of care until they reach the age of 26. Research shows that providing extended support makes a tangible difference; it empowers young people with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. In jurisdictions where support extends to 26, youth in care experience better outcomes in education, employment, and housing stability.

Unfortunately, Alberta has taken a step backward by cutting crucial funding. This decision disregards the statistical evidence and the compelling stories of numerous individuals who have struggled to survive without the necessary support. Without intervention, the trend of youth homelessness will continue to rise.

By restoring this funding, we can provide stability and a fighting chance for young people to build successful futures. We urge the Alberta government and Child and Family Services to listen to the voices of the youth impacted, and to prioritize their well-being and success over budget cuts.

Please join in signing this petition to demand that Alberta restore funding for youth transitioning out of care. Together, we can make a difference. Your signature can help provide a brighter future for these young lives.
