The Issue

Living in the heart of Jaywick and serving as a Tendring District Council councillor, I can personally attest to the invaluable role the Martello Tower Centre plays in our community. It is not just a historical landmark, but also a beacon of hope and creativity for many of us—in fact, for my own family, friends, local community groups, and the charities that operate in the area, it serves as an essential space. From art exhibitions to community workshops, youth projects to educational programmes, the activities held here are numerous and impactful.

Essex County Council's decision to cut the funding for the Martello Tower Centre is a grave misjudgement that severely threatens the fabric of community life in Jaywick. For years, this centre has supported creative endeavours and fostered communal bonds, while also attracting visitors and promoting local tourism. Its closure would not only signify a loss of culture and community spirit but would also lead to a void in a safe and constructive space vital for community development.

According to recent studies, community centres like Martello Tower significantly contribute to lowering crime rates and improving well-being in their respective areas. Across the UK, community places are increasingly recognised as essential to individual and community well-being, with the Locality’s ‘Saving Money by Doing the Right Thing’ report estimated savings of £13.42 for every £1 invested in community-focused projects. Preserving such local hubs is cost-effective and necessary for long-term societal benefits.

Jaywick requires sustained development and support to maintain its historical and cultural integrity while ensuring the well-being of its residents. Cutting off funding disrupts this growth, affecting not only current generations but also future ones.

We urge Essex County Council to reconsider their funding withdrawal and prioritise the revival of the Martello Tower Centre. By safeguarding this critical space, we ensure continued nourishment of community ties and opportunities for Jaywick to prosper. Please sign this petition to bring back the funding needed to keep the Martello Tower Centre open and thriving for generations to come.
