The Issue

In recent times, Ontario students, including my granddaughter who has just begun her academic journey at Guelph University, and many others, are facing significant uncertainty due to the Ontario government’s cutbacks on the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) funding under Premier Doug Ford’s administration. These cuts threaten not only the livelihoods of our young and bright students but also the future of our province as these individuals are our future innovators, leaders, and essential contributors to our society.

For many students, OSAP is not just an option; it is a necessity. It ensures that everyone, regardless of their economic background, has the opportunity to pursue higher education, focus on their studies, and strive for excellence without the looming cloud of financial insecurity. Our young scholars work diligently, showcase immense capabilities, and possess an unwavering drive to succeed, and thus deserve support, not hindrances.

Cutbacks in OSAP funding limit the accessibility of higher education to many hardworking students, potentially derailing the dreams and aspirations of those who cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket expenses for tuition, books, accommodations, and daily living needs. We all know the value of education not only enriches individuals but also benefits the community at large through educated contributors to the economy and society.

According to the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, deep cuts to OSAP funding disproportionately affect low-income and minority students, exacerbating systemic inequities. This austerity measure is not a reflection of the Ontario we believe in—a province that promotes equality, opportunity, and advancement for all its residents.

We demand the immediate restoration of full OSAP funding to ensure our children and grandchildren can continue to dream, achieve, and build a better future for us all. It is imperative for the prosperity of Ontario that we provide the necessary resources for the future generations to thrive.

Join us in urging Premier Doug Ford and the Ontario government to prioritize education and reinstate OSAP funding to its former full capacity. Your signature can make a difference and inspire the change our young students desperately need today.
