The Issue

The Galloway Township School District has made a decision that significantly impacts our children's education by cutting two music positions from our programs. This means that instead of receiving music education every five days, students will now only receive it every ten days. While this decision may appear to address budget constraints, it actually undermines essential elements that contribute to a thriving educational environment.

Music education is a pillar in shaping a rich and positive school culture. It brings students, staff, and the community together through performances, shared experiences, and a collective sense of pride. For many students, music is more than just an extracurricular activity. It's a space where they find a sense of belonging, where they feel valued and motivated to engage in their school life. Eliminating these opportunities can diminish students' passion for education, disconnect them from their community, and reduce overall student morale and enthusiasm.

Research has consistently shown that music education enhances cognitive abilities, improves academic performance, and fosters essential skills like discipline, teamwork, and creativity. According to a study published by the National Association for Music Education, students involved in music programs score significantly higher in math and reading tests compared to those who are not. By reducing music education, we're not only compromising students' artistic development but also their academic growth.

Moreover, music programs offer avenues for personal development and socialization that are integral to students' holistic education. They encourage emotional expression and provide a platform for students to communicate and collaborate effectively. These are invaluable life skills that extend beyond the classroom.

By cutting music positions, Galloway Township School District risks diluting these benefits and sending a message that music and arts are expendable when, in reality, they are crucial components of comprehensive education.

We appeal to the Galloway Township School District to reconsider this decision and restore full music education for our students. Doing so reinforces our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals ready to face the diverse challenges of the world.

Please join us in urging the school district to prioritize music education. Sign this petition to ensure that our students continue to receive the enriching education they deserve.
