We did it.
Because thousands of Michigan residents spoke up, signed, shared, and stayed engaged, House Bill 4122 has been signed into law. This is a meaningful, measurable win for Michigan cottage food businesses and the families and communities we serve.
For too long, Michigan’s $25,000 cap forced safe, transparent, neighbor-to-neighbor food businesses to stop growing right when they proved they were responsible and in demand. This victory moves Michigan forward.
Here is what this new law delivers:
The sales cap increases to $50,000 in gross annual sales before a license is required.
A higher $75,000 cap is available if the operation sells at least one cottage food product priced at $250 or more per unit.
Online sales and third-party delivery are allowed, as long as the producer provides an opportunity for the customer to directly interact before the sale. A virtual meeting counts. This preserves direct accountability while allowing modern ordering and delivery.
A voluntary registration option is created through the MSU Product Center, with privacy protections tied to that registration process.
Today is about one thing: celebrating this win. Your support made this happen. Thank you for showing Michigan lawmakers that local, home-based food businesses matter.
We will share more details as state agencies release official guidance and implementation timelines. For now, take a moment to celebrate. We earned it.
