Restore Free Public Access to the Pickleball Courts at Gillette Park

Restore Free Public Access to the Pickleball Courts at Gillette Park
The Issue
We, the undersigned members of the Wilson, NC community, strongly oppose the recent implementation of hourly fees ($20–$30) for the use of the pickleball courts at Gillette Park.
These courts were funded by public dollars and meant to serve everyone, regardless of income. Charging fees to use a public space unfairly excludes seniors, families, youth, and residents on fixed or limited incomes. It transforms a beloved community gathering space into a “pay-to-play” facility — something that does not align with the values of inclusivity, accessibility, and fairness.
We believe:
- Public parks and facilities built with tax money should remain free to use.
- Recreation and wellness opportunities should not be restricted based on ability to pay.
- Major changes to public space usage should involve community feedback and transparency.
We demand that:
- The hourly fees for pickleball court use at Gillette Park be removed immediately.
- A public meeting be held to discuss any proposed changes that affect community access to recreational spaces.
- Future decisions regarding public park access be made with full transparency and input from residents.
Pickleball is more than a sport at Gillette Park — it’s a way for neighbors to connect, stay active, and build community. Let’s keep it free and accessible for all.
